I just read the book "24/6" by @TiffanyShlain & I couldn't recommend it more 📚

Many of us want to:

🔥 Reduce burnout
✨️ Align with our values
🌱 Make necessary changes
🌄 Be more present in our lives

But how can we let our world go quiet enough to do so?

By living a "24/6" life!

Just one full day a week where you are tech-free can make all the difference in realizing how addicted we are to our phones and allow us to reclaim some of the time (and hobbies) they have stolen from us 🥷

You may want to push back on the notion that the "bad" stuff that happens to us, really is the "good" stuff. But I promise you, as soon as you make that shift in mindset, you realize how much has gone wrong to make your life feel so right ✅️

I want us all to work on being a little more comfortable with being uncomfortable (our dogs are counting on us to do that work) 🫣

Our thoughts are always looking to confirm our biases ✅️

So if we want to believe (or have been told) we have a "bad" dog, we look for examples in our enviormnent that confirm why we should keep playing small 🤏

So how should we live our lives? 🤷‍♀️

By doing what's best for you (& your dog) despite others (and sometimes despite yourself) 🙈

Your next right thing? Put yourself in someone else's shoes today 👟

What you learn might just need to be filed under "Things I didn't understand until I learned them myself #192,384" or "ways I've evolved" 🧬

Hey y'all! It's me, Heather, owner of Handful of Leashes 👋

A lot of dog trainers become trainers because they had a "bad" dog. The dog that made them question "Is it really supposed to be this hard?" 🥺

I had a different experience.

I became a dog trainer because I had a really great dog... until I didn't.

When I was 18 years old, our 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog S'more (who was friendly, crate trained, & knew sit / down) got hit by a car... because she didn't have any recall 🏃‍♀️

When we got our next family pet Stitch (another aussie cattle dog), I couldn't let go of the traumatic experience of having a great dog for far too short of a time ⏳️

This sparked my desire for a much longer time with Stitch (and the training it would require to raise those odds of a long & healthy life) 🌄

I learned all I needed to learn about dog behavior & training tools (even went to Delval, a solely animal-field university, 2 years later).

One thing lead to another and @handfulofleashes grew to what it is today. I now work with clients each week doing private, training lessons in their homes - keeping their dogs from a similar fate as my old dog S'more.

While Stitch sadly passed of cancer 2 years ago, I have taken all I've learned from 10 years with her into my relationship with our newest girl Opal (pictured here in a perfect off-leash heel) ✨️

Every day I am so thankful for the hard lessons I've learned and the owners I get to help (so they don't have to learn the same lessons the hard way) 🌱
